The responsibility is with the seller to ensure that all paperwork reaches the appropriate office fully completed, signed and dated where required.

A) Vehicles Registered Before 1st January, 1993.

Complete a Change of Ownership form (RF200*), and submit it to your local tax office, making sure that it is signed by both parties and that the date of sale is clearly indicated. Enclose the log book with the form.


Note: If the Vehicle Registration Book is missing, and If there is no contact with the seller, the new owner must submit a statutory Declaration Form to your local Motor Tax Office. The Declaration includes garage certified details and the sworn date of purchase can be used as the date from which the tax is to be charged, no Garda stamp is required. Statutory Declarations must be witnessed by a commissioner for Oaths, Notary Public/Practising Solicitor or Peace Commissioner. Please contact your local Motor Tax Office to request this form

B) Vehicles Registered After 1st January, 1993
Complete the appropriate section on the reverse of the vehicle licensing certificate ensuring new owner details are completed along with signatures from both parties and the date of sale and send the document to the Department of Transport (not the motor tax office). The new owner will receive a registration certificate in his/her name in due course.

Notification of transfer of vehicle ownership to a motor dealer for vehicles registered after 01/01/1993

Form RF105 must be completed by both buyer and seller and forwarded to the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport while the Vehicle Registration Certificate is surrendered to the Motor Dealer acquiring the vehicle.

Change Ownership on a Company Vehicle, e.g. company car 

If the new owner of a vehicle is a company (as registered under the Companies Act 1963), please follow these guidelines for completing forms RF200 and RF105:

  • Use the name and address of the company as stated in its Certificate of Incorporation.
  • The signature must be that of the Managing Director or Company Secretary.

If the new owner is a privately owned firm, please follow these guidelines for completing forms RF200 and RF105:

  • Use the name of the company by which it is commonly known AND the full name(s) of the owner(s) or partner(s).
  • The signature must be that of an owner or a partner.
