The Green Dog Walkers`

The Green Dog Walkers Programme is a new initiative in the fight against dog litter. It is a community led, regional based programme involving Dublin City Council, South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council, Fingal County Council, Meath County Council and Wicklow County Council. The programme is a positive, friendly way to change attitudes about dog fouling.

How to get involved

Become a Green Dog Walkers volunteer and complete this form (as Gaeilge) and pledge to

  • clean up after your dog
  • wear the armband or put the Green Dog Walker collar on your dog when walking
  • carry extra dog waste bags
  • be happy to be approached to 'lend' a dog waste bag to those without
  • be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs

Run a Green Dog Walkers event in your area - you will need

  • to be a constituted community group
  • Plan at least three events/campaigns for the year. e.g. Pledge stands (decide on locations e.g. popular dog walking areas, school/community event), presentations to schools/sporting groups, promotion through community events

Tips on how to run a Green Dog Walkers campaign

  • Keep it friendly
  • Complete a dog fouling survey in your area before your events and then revisit the same area at the end of the year and see the difference you've made
  • Do you need permission to have a stall at your chosen location
  • Public liability insurance
  • Safety in numbers - never leave someone to run a stand on their own
  • Have a water bowl and doggie treats available
  • Share information - ask where are the biggest problem areas and share learning - what worked well for you
  • Take photographs
  • Have a toy mascot dog
  • Use social media - Resident Association websites, facebook pages and twitter spread the word as much as possible.
  • Involve children at Green Dog Walkers events
  • Have a friendly and well socialised doggie mascot
  • Pen and paper in case you run out of armbands etc you can take names and address and post them out later.
  • A small portable table
  • A couple of stools
  • Pens
  • Doggie bags

And most all enjoy your event and acknowledge and thank all your volunteers
