Smithfield Enhancement Scheme

Smithfield Plaza’ the competition award winning design by McGarry Ni Eanaigh Architects, completed in 1999, determined the significant urban design concept for Smithfield.  At that time it wasn’t feasible to complete the southern end of the plaza due to the LUAS works.  The recent ‘Smithfield Quarter Enhancement Plan’ is the second phase of the regeneration of the urban landscape which built and extended on the earlier works. The project was delivered by Dublin City Council at a cost of €4.8m and funded by the European Regional Development Fund through  the ERDF Gateways Fund of the Southern & Eastern Regional Operational Programme, the Irish Government and Dublin City Council.

A significant level of  discussion and consultation was undertaken by the City Council with local residents and traders and other key stake holders.  The main deliverables of the Scheme were the completion of the civic space at both the northern end and south of the LUAS; upgrade existing infrastructure; provision of facilities for Events and Markets; to increase footfall to the area; greening the Area and provision of a children’s quarter. An internal Dublin City Council multi disciplinary team, led by the City Architects Division, was put in place to deliver the project.

The works undertaken comprised constructing  a platform in contemporary stone south of the LUAS line and the realignment of the car parking at the north end; repaving the streets adjoining the plaza in historic paving sets, upgrading the public lighting and a new Dublin bikes station; provision of pop up power units and welfare facilities; remodelling junctions to provide a vehicular route designed to facilitate tour buses; a new terrace area, planters and trees and the introduction of play equipment.

The works which were completed in 2012 have greatly enhanced the Smithfield Area and the new infrastructure makes the public open space a more user friendly events venue.
