New look Markievicz Leisure Centre re-opens

Celebrate Valentine’s ‘Happy Heart and Happy Mind’ day.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Brendan Carr will officially re-open Sport and Fitness Markievicz Leisure Centre, Townsend Street, Dublin 2 at 11.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 14th February, 2017.

Speaking about the event the Lord Mayor said: “I want to congratulate Sport and Fitness Markievicz for organising this day to encourage people to look after their health and fitness by using the many facilities that are available in the centre. I encourage people to give generously to support Irish Heart for whom a collection is taking place throughout the today, to support the wonderful work carried out by this organisation.  I know lots of people make new year resolutions to take out gym membership, but I hope by sampling the facilities on offer here today people will be encouraged to keep up their membership and continue to look after their physical and mental wellbeing.”

Fund raising will take place during the day for Irish Heart as participants are invited to ‘Swim the Eiffel Tower’ to raise much needed funds for the charity. There will be special membership offers available on the day and spot prizes will be given to lucky winners of the various events and challenges.

Eoin Treanor, Dublin Regional Fundraising Manager for Irish Heart, said: “Every hour someone in Ireland suffers from a stroke and every day hundreds of Irish people are diagnosed with heart disease. Heart Disease and stroke is Ireland’s number one killer and it shouldn’t be this way.

“Our core mission is to help Irish people to live life better. The money raised today by the members of Markievicz Leisure Centre will help Irish Heart fund vital research into heart disease and stroke, allow our advocacy team to represent the voices of those affected, fund education programmes in schools and workplaces and help provide services to individuals directly impacted by stroke and heart disease across Ireland.”

Members of the public are invited to drop in throughout the day and sample the facilities on offer in the centre free of charge.

Lots of well-know sportspeople will be in attendance during the day. Join Philly McMahon, Dublin All Ireland medal winner, who will demonstrate how the Dublin Football Team train from 1–2pm; learn how to box with Michael Carruth, Olympic gold medallist at a Boxercise session from 7-8p.m. and get tips poolside from expert swim coach Eamonn Tilley from 4.30–6.30pm.
