Events in Dublin 2012

The function of the Events Management Unit is to consent to agree to an event and/or an activity taking place in the public realm. It also facilitates and partners events, provides an advisory role and a liaison service for events and initiates events.

It is the objective of Dublin City Council, that the events:

  • provide economic benefits to the city
  • grow the tourist and local visitor numbers and promote Dublin as a brand
  • help develop and promote animated activity in the city

Definition of an Event:

“event” means – a public performance which takes place wholly or mainly in the open air or in a structure with no roof or a partial, temporary or retractable roof, a tent or similar temporary structure and which is comprised of music, dancing, displays of public entertainment or any activity of a like kind

An image of a juggler outside St Stephen's GreenIf your event is expected to attract an audience in excess of 5000 people (in any one event) you are required to apply for an Event Licence under Part XVI of the Planning and Development Act 2000 and you should contact the Planning Department, Tel:01 222 2149 or email: planning@dublincity.ie

Anyone planning to hold an event outdoors in a public space or carry out any activity in a public space, which is under the control of Dublin City Council and has an expected audience of less than 5000 people, should contact the Events Unit, Tel:01 222 2242 or email details of your proposal to: events@dublincity.ie

  • filming,
  • product sampling/ Promotion,
  • charity collections
  • store launches (which includes any other activity),
  • cycling /fun run/ walking events,
  • strolling characters etc.
