Smithfield Box Fest 2016

‘Smithfield Box Fest’, an intercultural boxing event, will take place from Monday, 26th September to Saturday, 1st of October 2016 in Dublin City Council’s Aughrim Street Sports Centre, Smithfield, Dublin 7.

The Festival, which is in its 7th year, has been organised by Smithfield Amateur Boxing Club in conjunction with Dublin City Council and Irish Athletic Boxing Association.  The Festival is about promoting cultural integration and demonstrating how the sport of boxing can be used to promote social inclusion.

The week will include a training camp with boxers from Russia, Ukraine, England, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia and Northern Ireland, Denmark, Poland and Ireland. This will culminate in a boxing tournament that will take place from Thursday, 29th September – Saturday, 1st October.

Speaking at the launch, Lord Mayor Brendan Carr said, “I am delighted to be here this morning to meet and welcome the young men and women who are participating in this tournament. I also congratulate Smithfield Boxing Club and Dublin City Council for their work in the development and promotion of social inclusion initiatives and events in Smithfield and in Dublin City.”

Igor Khmil, Head Coach of Smithfield Amateur Boxing Club added, “We would like to thank Dublin City Council for their unwavering support of the Box Fest which continues to grow each year. We have teams coming from all across Europe to compete in the tournament.  The Festival will show how sport has no boundaries or limits and I know that all the teams will come together in a spirit of sportsmanship and fairness.”
