Stars Presented with Medals at Awards Ceremony in Charleville Mall Library

Dublin City Libraries are delighted to announce that the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Nial Ring, will present medals to children that took part in the Summer Stars Reading Adventure at an Awards Ceremony in Charleville Mall Library on Thursday, 27th September at 3pm.

The Summer Stars Reading Adventure took place in libraries all around the country during the summer months. Children were challenged to read eight books and were given small rewards along the way to encourage their progress. The children that completed the challenge are invited to an Awards Ceremony in their local library.

In Dublin City Libraries more than 2,500 children got involved in the Summer Stars Reading Adventure this year and 1,400 of these children were new library members.

Participation at Charleville Mall Library, in Dublin’s north east inner city, has doubled since the reading initiative was launched in 2016. This has been partly due to the success of the ‘Readers in Residence’ Programme.

The ‘Readers in Residence’ programme provides for three experts in children’s books to visit primary schools, secondary schools and other local venues to encourage children to read for pleasure. The Readers introduce the children to a range of reading material which is suitable for their age and reading level and provide fun activities to encourage creative engagement with the texts.

The programme also involves trips to the library and visits by well-known authors and illustrators. The programme is funded by the North East Inner City Initiative and managed by the Dublin UNESCO City of Literature Office.

Lord Mayor, Nial Ring, said “Reading is vital in everyday life and for educational success. Every child should have support to develop their reading skills and to experience the joy of reading for pleasure. By promoting the Summer Stars, Dublin City Libraries are providing much needed encouragement to children all over the city.”

The Summer Stars Reading Adventure is coordinated on a nationwide basis by the Libraries Development section of the Local Government Management Agency.
