RB Digital Comics

RBdigital is Dublin City Libraries’ free app for comics and graphic novels. You can create an account with your library card and an email address. The app is free and is available on Android, iOS, and Kindle devices.

In addition to the digital magazines that it's best known for, the RBdigital app now includes a great selection of comics. The libraries’ previous app was noted for lacking superhero comics and this new resource performs an about-face. Marvel heroes now dominate the catalogue with hundreds of collected editions and some colossal omnibuses.

You can plot the content of the catalogue by the popularity of the Marvel cinematic universe.  There are multiple Avengers titles, and the site is replete with Black Panther, Deadpool, and Guardians of the Galaxy collections, but scratch the surface of the Hollywood gloss and there are plenty of books worth your time.

Black Panther
The latest adaptation of Ms. Marvel is a teenage, Muslim immigrant who struggles with her emotional development as much as she does with supervillains. Pre-dating his worldwide phenomenon with Saga, Brian K. Vaughan’s Runaways is a complete series starring a group of kids who discover that their parents are secretly an organisation of crooks and villains.

There are some books here that I’ve been meaning to read and might finally get around to now. Mark Waid and Frank Miller’s respective runs on Daredevil crop up. Elsewhere you can find the American interpretation of everyone’s favourite, fascist, future-cop, Judge Dredd and a multitude of TV tie-ins like Classic Powerpuff Girls, Star Trek, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Files, Transformers, and True Blood.

RBdigital’s app means there’s no waiting and no need to queue or reserve and items. You can checkout comics immediately and download them to your device. They expire automatically at the end of the month-long loan period and you can renew them, or return them early when you’re finished with them.
