Spring into Storytime at Ballymun Library

Cheep! Cheep!‘Spring into Storytime’ is a national story-time initiative in public libraries which ran during the month of April. It celebrates the importance of families reading together and sharing stories – values that are central to all Baby and Toddler Book Club sessions at Ballymun Library. With an attendance of 30 people at the Baby Book Club, we certainly sprang back with gusto following the Easter break!  It was wonderful to see such an enthusiastic crowd present!

To date, stories with lift-the-flap features have proved very popular with Baby Book Club Members.  With this in mind, we kicked off this session with the story ‘Cheep! Cheep!’ by Sebastien Braun.  This book encourages little ones to talk.  The lift-the-flap element on each page is designed to teach children about animals and the noises they make. The children were enthralled!  We sang our old favourite song ‘Old MacDonald’ to round off the story.

It's a Little BabyWe have a great book to read next week.  It’s titled ‘It’s a Little Baby’ and is written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Rebecca Cobb.  This book will introduce your baby to the concept of hide-and-seek again with its lift-the-flap features.  Julia Donaldson has written many wonderful books for children and is a strong supporter of the work of public libraries.  You will find plenty of her stories available for loan at Dublin City Libraries. The books range in age from babies to school-going children.  We’re looking forward to introducing her books to such a young audience next Tuesday.

Toddler Book Club

Squash and a Squeeze and Sharing is CaringWe had a good turnout at the Toddler Book Club also with 12 in attendance.  We started covering social skills for school with preschoolers by reading ‘Sharing is Caring’. Through the books’ characters Bip, Bop and Boo, children learn how to make friends and how to play nicely with each other.  This book is part of the publisher Dorling Kindersley’s series entitled ‘Skills for Starting School’.  We will return to the theme of starting school over the next few weeks.

We will also cover a book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler with the toddlers next week.  ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ was one of Julia’s first books.  It’s about a woman who worries that her house is too small for her to live in until a wise old man teaches her otherwise!  Julia herself grew up with her parents, younger sister, grandmother, aunt, uncle and pet cat named Geoffrey in the same house.  This crowded scenario no doubt provided the inspiration for this book!  It’s a very funny read and one which you and your child will love reading together!!  We will finish the session by reading a very nice poem Julia wrote about Public Libraries.

See you next week.
