The Coming of the Railway to Inchicore
Times & Dates
Wednesday 27 September at 6pm
Liam O'Meara will reveal that it was at Inchicore that the Grand Canal’s first lock was located; here that the old mail coaches would pass down Chapel Road to the turnpike at the Cow and Calf en route to Kildare; and of course, here that the Great Southern and Western Railway company set up its base.
The formation of the railway company brought great employment and prosperity countrywide. At ‘the Works’ locals honed their various skills, which were passed on to generations. This presentation traces the story from the advent of the railway to its progression into modern times.
