Glamour and modernism. The social history of the department store in Dublin's north city retail district 1853-2003.
In 1853, McSwiney, Delany & Co. opened its 'monster mart' on Sackville Street, one of the first purpose-built department stores in Europe. In the third talk of the Central Library's series on the retail industry in Dublin 1, Dublin City Council Historian in Residence Dr. Mary Muldowney will discuss how the development of the department stores in the area reflected the increasing modernisation of the city.
