Handshake Project

Dublin is one of 16 European cities taking part in the Handshake project. The project aims to help cities of all types become more liveable places by improving conditions for cycling as an everyday mode of transport.
Three ‘cycling capitals’; Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Munich mentor ten ‘future cycling capitals’ to support them in implementing a range of measures to improve conditions for cycling in each city. Amsterdam is Dublin’s mentor.
Future Cycling Capitals:
- Dublin
- Bordeaux
- Bruges
- Cadiz
- Greater Manchester
- Helsinki
- Krakow
- Riga
- Rome
- Turin
Two cycling solutions that Dublin is aiming to achieve through the project is increased cycle parking and better accounting for cyclists at traffic lights.
DCC is aiming to install 1,000 new cycle parking stands (creating 2,000 cycling parking spaces) per year.
DCC is trialling detectors at traffic lights to give extra ‘green light’ time and extra clearance time to cyclists to increase safety as they cross junctions. This new technology is currently being tested at 13 sites across the city.
The Handshake project is funded through the European Union‘s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under the CIVITAS Initiative.
