Your library is open
Published on 29th November 2021
There are very few things in life that are free, but your library is one of them.
You can enjoy the library space, for example, to:
• Relax with a book or a newspaper
• Look into events and culture
• Meet friends and family
• Catch up on work or study
• Use the computers and WiFi.
Computer access and study spaces in our libraries will be facilitated in accordance with government guidelines on social distancing. As not all computers are in service, the maximum slot will be 30 minutes and extra time cannot be granted. Laptop lending is not available again just yet. You can also borrow magazines and comics.
Visit the library!
Where can you get Home Energy Saving Kits, instruments, business and employment support, books, and music - all for free?
At your local library, that's where! Now, with coronavirus having affected the arts and culture sector deeply, it's more important than ever to support the libraries, which, as well as helping to create book lovers, also often provide things like WiFi and computer access and help with accessing local services, and act as a community hub.
Become a member
The first step to supporting libraries is by becoming a member of your nearest one. Many libraries will be able to sign you up if you go in person or online via their website. Since the 1st of January 2019, library members have not had to pay fines for overdue items. Any valid public library card can be used to reserve and borrow items from any public library. A PIN is issued with your membership card when you join the library. You need this number to use the PCs and online services.
Borrow, borrow, borrow
Once you're a member, make sure you borrow books from the library. While libraries started as a place to borrow books, they’ve evolved into much more. The offerings from your local library, used correctly, can add up to some serious savings in your pocket. Movies, magazines and internet.
Borrowing can take place online; ebooks and audiobooks can be borrowed via your phone or other devices, and there's usually no charge involved. Download the library app. We also have a huge range of terrific eResources to choose from that includes newspapers, magazines and comics.
Public libraries provide access to information about business planning, market research and finance opportunities for entrepreneurs who are looking for spaces to conduct research, use technology and upskill. Technology in libraries offers access to training and skills that otherwise would not be available for everyone.
Check out your libraries presence on social media: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, YouTube.
Instruments
Over 100 instruments free for teens to borrow at the Dublin City Libraries! More libraries are starting services like these, which let you experience an instrument for a while before dropping the money to buy one or rent one longer-term from a music store.

If you aren’t sure what your local library does or does not offer, don’t hesitate to ask. And if the library doesn’t offer something that you’d like, suggest it! Or you can email: [email protected]
