Walkinstown Library highlights 2021
Published on 30th November 2021
Despite being locked down for nearly five months, Walkinstown Library had a very busy year engaging with borrowers.
Highlights of the year included:
Ireland Reads Day. On 25th February everyone was encouraged to pick up a book for pleasure. We featured staff recommendations, book promotions, and a poet of the week blog.
The library hosted many workshops online, all of them a great success and covering diverse topics such as Photography, Nutrition, Furniture Recycling, Dancing for people with limited mobility, weaving and Local History talks (always a big favourite) Record numbers attended Zoom presentations on the history of 'Crumlin, Drimnagh and Walkinstown', and also the 'Dolphins Barn Brickwork' presented so well by Local Historian Cathy Scuffil. We also ran two Digitise the Nation programmes.
One City, One Book this year was Leonard and Hungry Paul by Ronan Hessian and it got very positive feedback from all of our readers.
“Seeds for Deeds” campaign was taken up by many of you and we hope that you enjoyed the fruits of your labour in the garden this summer.
Our children’s programme was extremely busy and included an Easter and Halloween competition with prizes for all entrants. The storyboards on the library railings, The Presidents Glasses, was enjoyed by all and what a joy it is to see the little ones and their parents still engaging with it.
Well done to all who participated in the Summer Stars campaign which once again attracted hundreds of entrants and kept the children engaged with the library though out the summer.
It was fantastic to welcome families to our outdoor events in July. The sun shone and many children enjoyed sensory storytime and story time Treasure Trail performed with great enthusiasm by students of the Gaeity School of Acting. Craft bags were given to all the participants. Children’s Book Festival and Science Week were all celebrated with zoom calls and presentations to schools by authors Sarah Webb and Alan Nolan with their Animal Crackers Tales and also renowned dinosaur expert Dale Treadwell.
Walkinstown library launched their Library Newsletter in April. They also celebrated 60 years in the community and featured original articles from the time in our newsletter. The library is delighted to welcome you back albeit in a more limited way. Please feel free to drop in to read the newspapers, to study in peace for up to 1.5 hours, to use the computer, and of course to browse our wonderful selection of new books, DVDS and magazines.
