New exhibition on Countess Markievicz opens at Richmond Barracks

“You never saw such excitement”: The 1918 Election of Countess Markievicz

Richmond Barracks is delighted to announce the launch of a new audio-visual exhibition “You never saw such excitement”: The 1918 Election of Countess Markievicz on Thursday the 20th September 2018 at 6.30pm by the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan T.D.

“As we reflect on the significant contribution women have made to our country over the last century we should also reflect on the missed opportunities for women and society in the conservative State which came into being after independence. We have made much progress in the Oireachtas to provide better and equal opportunities for all but we still have a way to travel. It is timely, on the 100 anniversary of the extension of the franchise to women to redouble our efforts to provide that opportunity” says the Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan T.D.

The exhibition is an addition to Richmond Barrack's permanent and online exhibition. It focuses on the two-year period from the release of Markievicz from Aylesbury Prison in June 1917 to her appointment as Minister for Labour in April 1919, with particular emphasis on her election campaign and those that campaigned for her. The exhibition brings into sharp focus how many historical challenges faced by women campaigners one hundred years ago; remain as contemporary challenges to women seeking representation today. At a time when the people of Ireland continue to work on our unfinished democracy and struggle to achieve equal representation of women in all aspects of public life, this exhibition reminds us of the rich timeline of women’s activism and tenacity.

“You never saw such excitement” the 1918 Election of Countess Markievicz will be central to a series of drama/history workshops Richmond Barracks will programme with local school girls and boys, concentrating on historical role models and empowerment and advocacy for equal representation.

The exhibition opens to the public on the 21st September 2018 and will be available online in late 2018. Images of Countess Markievicz are available on request from Richmond Barracks
