City Council thanks Animal Welfare organisations and Pet owners

Published on 17th December 2025

Dublin City Council would like to thank the shelters, rescues, sanctuaries and other animal welfare organisations that have worked tirelessly for the animals of our city over the past 12 months.

Without their help many of the strays, abandons and surrenders we have been able to help may not have found the loving homes they now have.

The Animal Welfare Team would also like to extend its thanks to all of the pet owners and animal lovers who have assisted them in their mission over the last year. Without their help, they would not have been able to partner with the wonderful animal organisations to rehome dogs, horses and other animals.

The animal welfare organisations operate mainly on volunteerism and donations. Dublin City Council would like to ask anyone who is in a position to do so, to think of those organisations and their important work this Christmas. Many shelters would appreciate donations of blankets, bedding or even dog food. Why not give your local rescue a call or check out their websites to see if you can help?

Councillor Deirdre Heney, Chairperson of Dublin City Council’s Animal Welfare Oversight Committee, in relation to the problem of puppies being surrendered after Christmas every year, urges “anyone considering purchasing a puppy this year to please consider adopting a dog from a dog shelter in order to assist our shelters and provide homes for abandoned dogs in our city.”  Cllr. Heney also said she wishes to “thank the staff of Dublin City Council’s Animal Welfare Unit for their work with animals in Dublin.”

If you are thinking of adding a furry or feathered friend to your household this Christmas, please check with the city’s many rescues to see if your new best friend is already waiting for you. Please take the time to consider if this pet is right for you and, of course, if you can provide for a good life for the animals you are hoping to home. The heroes in our rescues will help you make the right choice.

The Animal Welfare Team ask that you please continue to help us make this a safe place for the two legged, four legged or even winged creatures that inhabit our city. Never ignore cruelty and continue to report incidents of animal abuse and neglect. Your help allows us to be deploy our small but dedicated team to best affect.
