Dublin City Council launches new Portobello Matters social media campaign
Published on 23rd April 2021
Dublin City Council’s new campaign appeals to the public to respect the Portobello area and desist from outdoor drinking there.
This campaign is in response to numerous complaints from residents about the problem of outdoor drinking in the Portobello Area. It tells their story and highlights the negative impact this anti-social behaviour has on their lives.
“In recent months due to Covid-19 we have seen an increase in usage of our outdoor spaces. The canal area has been a popular and valued amenity for all. Unfortunately there has been an increase in anti-social behaviour in the area” said Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu. “These behaviours include people leaving their rubbish behind and people frequently urinating and even defecating outside someone’s home. We want everyone to be able to enjoy the space but the above behaviours are simply not ok. Please help support the local community by being respectful.”
The residents of Portobello welcome people who come to enjoy this public space. Tom, a resident, says “We want this to be a place where people feel comfortable coming to and enjoy but we also want it to be somewhere that is respected and honoured because it a beautiful part of Dublin.”

The message to visitors to Portobello is:
- Enjoy the area
- Do not litter
- Keep the noise down in the evenings
- Please do not consume alcohol in Portobello Plaza or along the Canal
Notes to the Editor:
Under the Dublin City Council (Prohibition of Consumption of Intoxicating Liquor on Roads and in Public Places) Bye-laws 2008, it is illegal to consume alcohol in a public place. Dublin City Council, An Garda Síochana, Waterways Ireland and Portobello Tidy Towns have collaborated together to promote the message that outdoor drinking in public places such as Portobello is not acceptable and we are asking members of the public to refrain from drinking alcohol in public places. Fixed Penalty notices of €75 may be issued by An Garda Síochana for the consumption of alcohol in a public place under the 2008 Bye Laws.
