Dublin City Council Officially Opens New Playground in Chapelizod!

Published on 19th December 2025

Dublin City Council is pleased to announce the official opening of a new playground in Chapelizod, located within the scenic Liffey Valley Park. This development is one of three new playgrounds delivered across the city in 2025, bringing the total number of playgrounds in City Parks to 74.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam remarked, "I am delighted to see the official opening of this new playground in Chapelizod. It reflects Dublin City Council’s commitment to creating inclusive, nature-inspired spaces for families across the city. By involving local schools and the community in the design process, we have ensured that this playground is not only engaging and fun but also a place where every child feels welcome."

Councillor Daragh Moriarity, who deputised on behalf of the Lord Mayor at the opening, added, "This playground is a fantastic example of how collaboration between the Council and the local community can deliver spaces that children of all abilities can enjoy. Projects like this strengthen our neighbourhoods and create lasting benefits for families."

The Chapelizod playground has been designed as a natural and inclusive play space, harmonising with the park’s unique character and biodiversity. Situated within walking distance of St Patrick’s National School, St Laurence’s National School and the new Scout Den, the project was informed by an extensive consultation process involving approximately 70–80 local children.

As part of this engagement, children participated in creative workshops, including willow weaving and biodiversity learning activities. Their feedback emphasised two priorities: a strong connection to nature and inclusivity for children of all abilities. The final design responds to the site’s natural slope in a playful manner and incorporates natural materials and multi-sensory zones, offering a variety of experiences, from vibrant social spaces to quieter areas for children with different needs.

Les Moore, Head of Parks, Biodiversity and Landscape Services, Dublin City Council added, "This playground is a wonderful example of how thoughtful design can connect children with nature while providing inclusive play opportunities. Our team worked closely with the local community to ensure the space reflects their ideas and needs, and we are proud to see it come to life in such a beautiful setting."

The Chapelizod playground represents a significant investment in public amenities and underscores Dublin City Council’s dedication to promoting biodiversity, play and community engagement.
