New ‘Dublin Winter Lights’ Installations Come to Merrion Square Park
Published on 25th November 2021
Dublin City Council is delighted to launch a range of brand new ‘Dublin Winter Lights’ installations at Merrion Square Park. The latest addition to the city’s famed festive illuminations will run on the following dates in December: Thurs 2nd – Sun 5th, Thurs 9th – Sun 12th, and Thurs 16th – Wed 22nd.
The project will see one of Dublin’s most beloved parks reimagined as a mesmerising winter wonderland, replete with a variety of LED-powered, eye-catching animations. One projection will even include an interactive element, allowing the artwork to come to life in new and exciting ways. The park will also boast a 15-metre-high illuminated Christmas tree.
Visitors are encouraged to keep an eye out for a number of exciting characters, who can be spotted at various locations throughout the park. One of Merrion Square’s best-known residents, Oscar Wilde, will also be participating in the festivities. Stop by his statue to see the writer recite some of his most famous lines. Top the journey off with a hot chocolate before exploring the other lighting installations around the city.
Speaking ahead of the launch, Lord Mayor of Dublin, Alison Gilliland, said, “I am delighted to be launching this spectacular new addition to the ‘Dublin Winter Lights’ festival. It will be fantastic to see Merrion Square Park, one of our city’s leading green spaces, transformed by these magnificent illuminations. These installations will undoubtedly be great fun for all of the family and will certainly provide some most welcome end-of-year festive cheer.”
In order to attend this event, visitors must register for a free ticket using Eventbrite. It is important for ticketholders to arrive at the park during their allocated timeslot, as they may not be guaranteed entry otherwise. Tickets are limited to a maximum of six per person. Entry will start from 5pm, with the last admissions at 9pm.
The Merrion Square Park installations are part of the wider ‘Dublin Winter Lights’ programme, which consists of twenty-one individual sites across Dublin city. Since 2018, ‘Dublin Winter Lights’ has dazzled Dubliners with its unique and enchanting animations. This year, the projections will be in place until the 1st of January. In light of the ever-changing Covid-19 situation, the utmost care is being taken concerning the health and safety of all visitors and staff present at this event. All in attendance will be asked to comply with the latest HSE guidelines and to wear a face mask where 2 metre social distancing is not possible. As a result of these considerations, Dublin City Council has restricted the capacity of the event to meet these social distancing requirements.
