Dublin City Council is delighted to announce Raheny Village as the winner of this year’s Dublin City Neighbourhood Awards.

Raheny Tidy Village Group were presented with the award and a prize fund of €5,200 by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy at a special ceremony in Croke Park tonight.

Acknowledging the many hours of voluntary work put in by people in communities all over Dublin City to improve their local area, Raheny was singled out because of the pride local people take in their village and in recognition of the many hours they spend every day ensuring that it is very clean and green.

Lord Mayor Caroline Conroy said, “Tonight we celebrate the dedication of so many people in our community who strive to make their local areas a better place for all to live in and enjoy.  These volunteers work tirelessly and relentlessly year after year and tonight is our way of congratulating them and thanking them on a job well done. The Raheny Tidy Village group should be very proud of themselves. Their work involves rain water harvesting, leaf composting, sustainable planting projects, pollinator project and Santry River survey.  Protecting the heritage of Raheny, they work to develop it as a tourist destination and highlight their location in the Dublin UNESCO Biosphere.”

The Tidy Village group advocate for Raheny by seeking maximum inputs from local and central government and monitoring the performance of those organisations. They carry out litter picking, graffiti removal and autumn leaf clearance on a weekly basis.

The Iveagh Trust- Kevin Street & Bull Alley Estates, in Dublin 8 received the runner-up prize for their achievements in creating a very calming community garden. The garden was created by the residents for the residents. Many residents are now second and third generation Iveagh Trust tenants who have strong connection to the estate, helping to create and foster a stable community.

Bernie Lillis, Dublin City Neighbourhood Awards Organiser with Dublin City Council said “The annual awards are all about recognising in a meaningful way the improvements made through the hundreds of hours of voluntary work done by people all over Dublin City. It recognises the work put in by residents, businesses and schools in this city to create, shape and enjoy all that is good about their area.  To receive the overall winner prize in a competition with 20 different categories is an outstanding achievement.  Well done to all but particularly to Raheny Tidy Village Group and The Iveagh Trust- Kevin Street & Bull Alley Estates in Dublin 8 for their passion and commitment to the environment and their communities.”
