History
The site was once part of the demesne of Rathmines' Castle, which was built in the sixteenth century and featured prominently in the Battle of Rathmines. The castle was removed in the mid-nineteenth century when the area was first laid out with fine red-brick villas, following construction of a tram line in 1878. The park is one of the finest examples of late-Victorian urban design in the Dublin city. It was transferred to Dublin Corporation in the early 1930s.
