Archaeology in Ireland is protected under the National Monuments Acts, the National Cultural Institutions Acts and the Planning and Development Acts. Most of central Dublin is a recorded monument, as are many locations outside this area.

To find out if a site in Dublin city is on the Record of Monuments and Places, contact the Archaeology Office [email protected] and include a site map.

To access the Sites and Monuments Record follow the link to the Historic Environment Viewer http://webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/

If you find an archaeological object contact the duty officer of the National Museum of Ireland T. (01) 6777444.

The archaeology of Dublin is safe-guarded and managed for the future through the planning process. The archaeological assets of the city are recognised and provided for in the cultural heritage polices, objectives and standards of the Dublin City Development Plan.

Dublin City Council employs a city archaeologist and an assistant city archaeologist to advise on archaeological issues and archaeological policy.
