Royal Canal Greenway Phase 3 – Upcoming Roadworks – 9th May 2025

Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower/Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Place

  • Reinstatement works for the footpath on the corner of Binns Bridge and Whitworth Road are scheduled for the weekend of 17th/18th May.
  • Traffic on the outbound side of Binns Bridge will be reduced to two lanes from 7:30pm on Friday 16th May to 6:00am on Monday 19th May, as pedestrians will be diverted into the nearside traffic lane.
  • Breaking out of the existing footpath will take place on the Friday evening (finishing before 11:00pm) and the Saturday morning, with the new footpath being laid on Saturday morning also.
  • The traffic management setup will be left in place for the rest of the weekend to allow sufficient time for the concrete to cure. It will be removed by 6:00am on the Monday morning. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.

Royal Canal Greenway Section 3 – Upcoming Roadworks – 7th April 2025

Further to the update of 1st April last, there have been some revisions to the timing of the roadworks scheduled for this week. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.

Bloody Sunday Bridge, Russell Street/Jones’ Road

  • Resurfacing and road marking works are scheduled for Tuesday 8th April, between 7:30pm and 6:00am. A stop/go system will be in place, as traffic will be reduced to one lane whilst works are ongoing.

  • The works crew will alternate between Bloody Sunday Bridge and Binns Bridge throughout the evening to ensure all noisy works (e.g. planing and breaking out old asphalt) are completed before 11:00pm.

Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower/Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Place

  • Resurfacing and road marking works on Whitworth Road at Binns Bridge are also scheduled for the night of Tuesday 8th April, between 8:30pm and 6:00am. A traffic light switch off and a stop/go system will be in place while works are ongoing. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, except on Whitworth Road, where it will be reduced to one lane only.

  • The works crew will alternate between Bloody Sunday Bridge and Binns Bridge throughout the evening to ensure all noisy works (e.g. planing and breaking out old asphalt) are completed before 11:00pm.
  • Reinstatement of the footpath where Whitworth Road meets Binns Bridge will be carried out at a later date; to be confirmed.

Cross Guns Bridge, Prospect Road/Whitworth Road/Phibsborough Road

  • Structural repairs are required on the roadway at two locations outside The Bernard Shaw pub; one on Prospect Road and one on Whitworth Road.
  • The road surface in the gaps between the dashed bus lane markings on the inbound side of Prospect Road also require repair works, known as overbanding.
  • These works are scheduled for the night of Wednesday 9th April, between 7:30pm and 6:00am. A traffic light switch off and a stop/go system will be in place at Cross Guns Bridge while works are ongoing. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, except on Whitworth Road, where it will be reduced to one lane only.
  • Reinstatement of damaged traffic detection loops are scheduled for the night of Thursday 10th April, between 7:30pm and 6:00am. A similar traffic light switch off and a stop/go system will be in place at Cross Guns Bridge.

  • Minor footpath works to address issues raised in the Cross Guns Bridge road safety audit are also scheduled to be completed on these evenings.

Royal Canal Greenway Section 3 – Upcoming Roadworks – 1st April 2025

The canal towpath between Cross Guns Bridge and Binns Bridge is now fully open to the public, though minor snagging works will continue on that section over the coming months. Work continues on the remainder of the project, with the objective of having all areas opened in Q3 2025.

Below are some updates about upcoming works that will affect the public domain. Dublin City Council apologises for any inconvenience that may be caused by these works.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • When the first layer of road surface is complete, the traffic signals will be switched on and the works crew will move to Binns Bridge. They will return later in the night to complete the final layer of road surface. This is to allow enough time for the first layer of surfacing to cure.
  • Minor footpath works to address issues raised in the Cross Guns Bridge road safety audit are also scheduled to be completed the same evening.
  • Reinstatement of damaged traffic detection loops will be carried out at a later date; to be confirmed. Temporary traffic detection will be put in place in the meantime.

Binns Bridge, Dorset Street Lower/Whitworth Road/Drumcondra Road Lower/Whitworth Place

  • Resurfacing works on Whitworth Road at Binns Bridge are also scheduled for the night of Wednesday 9th April, between 7:30pm and 6:00am. A traffic light switch off and a stop/go system will be in place while works are ongoing. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • These works will alternate with the aforementioned works at Cross Guns Bridge, so that only one set of traffic signals will be switched off at any one time.

  • As per Cross Guns Bridge, when the first layer of road surface is complete, the traffic signals will be switched on and the works crew will return to Cross Guns Bridge. They will return later in the night to complete the final layer of road surface.
  • Reinstatement of the footpath where Whitworth Road meets Binns Bridge will be carried out at a later date; to be confirmed.

Bloody Sunday Bridge, Russell Street/Jones’ Road

  • Roadworks at Bloody Sunday Bridge resumed on Monday 10th March 2025 and are expected to be substantially complete by Easter 2025.
  • One traffic lane will be closed and a stop/go system will be in place between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
  • Outside of these hours, both traffic lanes will be open, with the exception of Tuesday 8th April, where one lane will also be closed between 7:30pm and 11:00pm to carry out resurfacing works on the bridge.

Minor greenway/canal towpath works, between North Strand Road and Sheriff Street Upper (Royal Canal Greenway Phase 2)

  • Royal Canal Greenway Phase 2, between North Strand Road and Sheriff Street Upper, opened to the public on 31st July 2020. A subsequent access audit identified some works that need to be carried out, particularly to cater for visually-impaired pedestrians.
  • These works include the following items:
  • Raised paving around the structural supports of Spencer Bridge (beside Sheriff Street Upper).
  • Tramline tactile paving at each end of the segregated section of cycle track.
  • Extending the grassed area on the quayside at the Sheriff Street end.
  • Adding a railing to the quayside at the floating pontoon (near North Strand Road).
  • These works commenced on Monday 31st March and are expected to be complete by Friday 11th April.
  • Pedestrians, and particularly cyclists, are requested to exercise caution in the vicinity of the works.
