‘BagBin’ trial concludes on South William Street
Published on 15th March 2024
Dublin City Council would like to announce that the ‘BagBin’ trial it has been supporting on South William St in the city-centre has now concluded.
This initiative began last June and was intended to remove unprotected plastic waste bags being left for collection on the street.
Each retailer on the street got their own ‘BagBin’ and presented them for collection outside their own premises each day, just like they would a wheelie bin.
This trial has been an excellent opportunity for Dublin City Council to assess the benefits and risks associated with BagBins, compared to having loose bags on the street.
Dublin City Council will now assess the results of the trial before considering expanding it to other areas.
The ‘BagBin’ collapsible receptacle was trialled in the city previously, however during the initial trial the businesses used communal BagBins whereas in the most recent trial they had their own.
Dublin City Council is committed to ending the current unsatisfactory situation with plastic waste bags presented on high footfall streets.
The ‘BagBin’ initiative was supported by Dublin City Council, the business representative group DublinTown and the four Waste Collection companies that provide waste services to customers in the Dublin City Council Central Business District.
