Servants in the Big House in Ireland
Times & Dates
Wednesday 29 May 2024 at 6.30pm
Big houses depended on a workforce to cook, clean, serve tables, run baths, manage the demesne, answer bells when rung and raise children. The narrative of this workforce and their lives is the subject of this talk given by the Historian in Residence for Dublin Central, Elizabeth Kehoe.
In Phibsboro Library on Wednesday 29 May 2024 at 6.30pm.
Using both memoir and census records, as well as genealogical information, Elizabeth will relate the stories of three female domestic servants working in Irish big houses in the latter part of the nineteenth and early twentieth century; Marian McGuinness at Coole Park estate and Jane Jones and Kate Devereaux at Killeen Castle.
