IBAL results show Council investment in waste initiatives paying off

Dublin City Council has welcomed the results of the latest survey by the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) group, which show that while there is still work to do, there has been clear progress in the North Inner City.

Previously categorised a ‘litter blackspot’, that area of the city has now been re-categorised as ‘moderately littered’, its best ever result.

The IBAL group said that it is seeing sustained improvement in parts of the city as a result of greater investment from Dublin City Council.

Grafton St, College Green, Parliament St and Temple Bar all received a Grade A result in the survey.

O’Connell St received a B+ Grade, with the overall presentation of the street described as ‘excellent’.

Parnell St, Capel St and Leeson St Lower received a B Grade.

IBAL noted that there have been significant initiatives and litter awareness campaigns by Dublin City Council over the last year and that ‘it would seem that these are being reflected in the city-centre retaining its ‘moderately littered’ result’. IBAL also noted that council workers were ‘very much in evidence’ at many sites throughout the city-centre.

The group went on to say that if plans for the elimination of domestic waste collection in bags across the inner city are realised, ‘we will have a much cleaner’ capital city.

Phases 1 and 2 of the removal of plastic waste bags are well underway, taking more than 1,000 bags off the streets every day. Phase 3 is due to begin next month in the Stoneybatter area.

While the Council welcomes the results of this latest survey, it acknowledges that there is more work to do in tackling waste across the city.
