About Play

The importance of play. Play is essential for children and young people, not just for their physical heath but for their social and cognitive development too. Their natural creativity and imagination are enhanced through play.

Through play, children explore their creativity, build relationships and make sense of the world around them. Play is a fundamental right of every child and young person. It is essential not only for physical health but also for emotional, social and cognitive development.

Dublin City Council is committed to making Dublin a Child-Friendly and Playful City, where play is visible, valued and accessible in every neighbourhood. Our approach is guided by the Play Strategy 2022–2027, which places children and young people at the heart of our planning and design. We actively consult with them to shape play spaces that reflect their needs, cultures and imaginations
