Directories and Almanacs

Back to Heritage and History

Almanacs and street directories are an invaluable resource for researchers of 18th and 19th century Dublin. They contain information on civic administration, streets, businesses, and people who lived in Dublin. The earliest directory in Dublin City Libraries' collection is from 1636.

Irish Directories

Some Irish Directories are held in the Dublin City Library & Archive.

Pigot's Directory 1820, 1821, 1822 and 1824 are the earliest directories in the collection to cover all of Ireland.

They are followed by Slater's Directory of Ireland, published in the years 1846, 1856, 1870, 1881 and 1894. The 1894 edition has a very useful general directory of private residents of Ireland. These are held on microfiche.

Directories, which cover individual counties, other than Dublin, include:

  • Bassett's Directories of Wexford 1885, Down 1886 and Tipperary 1889
  • Gillespie's Directory of Co. Monaghan 1892
  • Griffith's Directory of Wexford 1874
  • Egan's History, Guide & Directory of Waterford 1892
  • Lowe's Directory of County Fermanagh 1880
  • Francis Guy’s Directory of Munster 1886

Belfast and Ulster Directories are available for 1924, 1930, 1934 and 1940. Belfast and Northern Ireland Directories are held for the years 1941, 1951 – 1962, 1964, 1966 – 1972, 1979, 1914 and 1996. These include street listings for Belfast.
