History

The O'Brien Institute on the Malahide Road in Marino was acquired by Dublin Corporation in 1982. Two years later, Dublin Fire Brigade began training its operational personnel here.

The story of the O'Brien Institute dates back to the 1800s when Bridget O'Brien, the daughter of a wealthy woollen draper, left her estate to the Archbishop of Dublin to fund a school for Catholic children. That's how The O'Brien Institute came to be built in the 1880s.

The French Gothic style building contained study halls, dormitories, a library and a laboratory. It operated as a school up until 1972 and, ten years later, Dublin Corporation bought it.

Training Centre

Today, the O'Brien Institute is still home to the Dublin Fire Brigade Training Centre, which is a fully equipped training facility with state-of-the-art equipment.

This is where Dublin Fire Brigade has trained all its operational personnel since 1984. Today, it also delivers external training to organisations, businesses, individuals and other fire services. Our courses cover a broad range of fire, medical and safety training.

Our instructors are experts in their field and can deliver bespoke training tailored to your needs. Find out more on Dublin Fire Brigade's Training page.

The Dublin Fire Brigade Museum

The Dublin Fire Brigade Museum at the O'Brien Institute is home to artefacts telling the story of Dublin Fire Brigade's 150 year history.

Set up in 1985, the museum houses a unique collection of items and can be visited by appointment every Thursday. Find out more on our dedicated Dublin Fire Brigade Museum page.
