Fire Control Strategies for Workplaces
Fire safety must taken into account when designing a building or changing the use of an existing building. Fire safety certificates are required for all building construction, alterations and extensions.
Make sure furnishings and fittings are up to the required standards and that all certification is up-to-date and ready for inspection.
Make sure your business adheres to standards for active fire protection and passive fire protection.
Record Management
Maintaining fire safety records is an important element of the proper management of a premises. All workplaces must have a Fire Safety Register.
Your workplace Fire Safety Register should record details of the following:
- Risks in your workplace and eliminated hazards.
- Details of installation, servicing and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems and emergency lighting.
- Servicing and maintenance of fire extinguishers.
- Staff training and fire drills.
- How you plan to alert occupants to emergency conditions.
- How you plan to initiate emergency responses.
- How you plan to enable occupants to extinguish small fires.
- How you ensure a defined and visible route of escape.
- How you ensure a constant supply of water.
- Safe assembly areas.
- Procedure to ensure the premises is vacated.
- Management functions and assigned duties.
- Inventory of fire protection equipment.
- Inspections and tests, including fire safety certificates.
