Helping to drive our city forward.
Our Connected City
Just like the arrival of electricity transformed our city in the early 1900’s, Dublin City Council plays a big part in helping our city’s telecoms and broadband networks drive Dublin forward into the 21st century.
Every day, we all use the internet to work, play, and manage so many areas of our daily lives. The connectivity that allows us do that has steadily improved over the years in two ways.
- Mobile – we have now arrived at the fifth generation of mobile telecoms, known as 5G. And from mobile towers and masts, to street-works across the city, this technology makes it possible for us to use our mobiles devices to make calls, go online and do so much more using extensive telecoms infrastructure.
- Fixed line & Broadband – land line telephones have been part of city life for over half a century. And today, fibre broadband is a type of broadband connection that uses fibre optic cables to deliver data to homes and businesses. You will have also heard of other types of broadband like FTTH and FTTC.
FTTH or Fibre-To-The-Home is a broadband technology that uses optical fibres to deliver high-speed internet and other digital services directly to your home. While FTTC refers to Fibre-To-The-Cabinet where a network of fibre optic cables runs to your local telephone exchange cabinet. And from there, data travels through the telephone copper cables for the final few hundred metres or kilometres to your home.
Ireland is committed to increasing connectivity all over the country and the National Broadband Plan (NBP) is a government-sponsored initiative to bring a minimum of 30-megabit broadband speeds to all premises in the country - not already catered for by the existing wholesale broadband providers. In addition, the proposed European Gigabit Infrastructure Act (GIA) aims for every home in Europe to have gigabit infrastructure connectivity by 2030. And Dublin City Council is committed to this objective also.
Our dedicated telecoms unit works hard to make sure that all communities have great connectivity that is deployed sensitively. The landline, fibre, 4G, and 5G networks are operated by commercial operators in the telecommunications industry. At Dublin City Council, we don’t operate telecoms equipment but we do provide access to our streetscapes and built environment where appropriate, to help drive connectivity in our city.
You can check your broadband and mobile device options on most provider websites. Just enter your address or eircode to see what is available to you.
The Commission for Communications Regulation’s (ComReg) predicted mobile outdoor coverage map provides coverage information across Ireland and at your location. This is also available as a mobile app from iOS and Android app stores.
If you live in Dublin City and have any queries about the telecoms infrastructure in your community, we want to hear from you.
