Information Campaigns - Public Safety Messages
Dublin City Council is working to provide a safer Active Travel Network that prioritises pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
Dublin City Council is raising awareness of two road features on the Active Travel Network:
- Continuous Footpaths at Side Roads
- Flashing Amber Arrows
These road features are currently being rolled out along the Clontarf to City Centre (C2CC) Active Travel Project.
Continuous Footpaths at Side Roads
Continuous footpaths are being provided across minor side roads. The footpath paving is level across the junction establishing the priority of pedestrians and wheelchair users, etc., thus improving their safety and convenience.
Whether turning into or out of the side road, vehicles and cyclists must yield to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
If a driver wants to turn down the side road:
- They must yield to the passing cyclist.
- Then to the footpath users.
- Both the driver and the approaching cyclist wait for the footpath users to pass.
- Then make the turn, cyclist first, followed by the vehicle.
Flashing Amber Arrows
Dublin City Council is rolling out flashing amber arrows for left turning vehicles at junctions.
- Cyclists have priority over turning vehicles when travelling straight through any junction.
- Flashing amber arrows are a reminder of this for drivers.
ATTENTION DRIVERS: Before making a turn you must:
- Yield to approaching cyclists.
- Allow cyclists time to clear the junction.
- Proceed to make your turn, when it’s safe to do so.
