Dublin City Council to begin €2.5m Talbot St maintenance works
Published on 5th June 2024
Dublin City Council would like to announce a programme of enhanced maintenance works aimed at the rejuvenation of Talbot St in the city-centre.
A fund of approximately €2.5m has been set aside for the project, with the works expected to take place from Monday 10th June for approximately 20 weeks.
This initiative is part of a 5 year plan to carry out enhanced maintenance works on a number of streets in the city-centre including: improved public space at Cathal Brugha Street, North Earl Street and Parnell Square, investment in greening and city tree planting around the Markets area and a redevelopment of Halston Street Park as well as environmental improvements at Ormond Square and Parnell Street.
Talbot Street and its surrounding lanes are home to many historic businesses and is a focal point for transport infrastructure connecting the area to the rest of Ireland via Connolly Station, Busáras, the Luas and a wide variety of Dublin Bus routes. Despite this connectivity and traditional strengths, the area has faced many challenges in recent years. In order to protect and develop the street and surrounding areas, the Council recognised that a concerted effort needed to be made.
The Talbot St scheme will focus on:
•Renewing 5,200 m2 of footpaths and 3,600 m2 of carriageway
•The upgrading and enhancing of the street’s public lighting
•Further investment in street planting and landscaping
Working with other partners such as Irish Rail, DublinTown and local businesses, plans are also being developed to improve other aspects of the area. These include an enhanced shopfront improvement scheme, an events programme, the provision of street art and feature lighting, as well as design improvement works on the Talbot Street bridge to make this historic piece of 19th Century transport infrastructure and its surrounds a more welcoming space and help it become a positive feature and signifier of the district.
Dublin City Council asks local businesses and property owners to work with it during these important works and support and engage where suitable in terms of works around private landings and cellars, or with art and lighting installations.
There will be traffic management in place whilst the works are being carried out. Pedestrian access to residential houses/businesses will be maintained at all times but please note there will be some disruption to traffic flow during this period. Local vehicular access will be maintained during the works but may require a brief delay to cover works area while allowing access.
