Chesterfield Avenue Active Travel Scheme

This scheme enhances walking and cycling facilities in the Phoenix Park. It is currently at the Concept Development and Option Selection phase of delivery.

Chesterfield Avenue in the main road running through Dublin's historic Phoenix Park. It is managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW).

The OPW aims to protect and conserve the Phoenix Park's historic landscape and character, as well as its archaeological, architectural and natural heritage, while also facilitating visitor access, education and interpretation, research, recreation and other appropriate activities.

This Active Travel scheme will upgrade walking and cycle facilities along Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park between Castleknock Gate and Conyngham Road/Parkgate Street. These changes will be made in a manner that is consistent with the OPW's vision for the park.

This scheme will form part of Dublin City Council's Active Travel Network. You can view our interactive GIS map to see where this scheme fits into the overall network.

Key Changes

Improvements are needed to make the Phoenix Park a safer and more user-friendly place for pedestrians and cyclists. In particular, upgrades are required to accommodate people with mobility impairments, wheelchair users, people with buggies and prams and people with disabilities.

Permanent segregated cycle facilities will keep cyclists and vehicles separated at junctions. Pedestrian crossings will also be installed to improve safety and accessibility for all users of the park.

Scheme Support and Delivery

The National Transport Authority have granted approval for a Sustainable Transport Measures Grant for this scheme. The Active Travel Support Office will provide services to advance the design of these upgrades. Dublin City Council's Active Travel Programme Office design team will work collaboratively with both the OPW and the Support Office to design and deliver this scheme.
