Interim Scheme: Suir Road to Thomas Street

This project will deliver 1.8km of interim walking and cycle facilities from Suir Road to Thomas Street. This is part of the Kilmainham to Thomas Street Active Travel scheme and this section of the scheme is now complete.

The first part of the Kilmainham to Thomas Street Active Travel scheme is an interim scheme, which runs from Suir Road to Thomas Street.

It will deliver 1.8km of new walking and cycle facilities, including:

  • A two way segregated cycle track along James' Walk using lane dividers and bollards.
  • A one-way protected cycle track along Marrowbone Lane using flexible kerbs and bollards. This will run from Robert Street South to Summer Street South on both sides.
  • New road markings, cycle logos and traffic signage across the route.
  • Improvements to all pedestrian crossings along the route.
  • A shared use lane for car traffic and bike traffic on Grand Canal View, Forbes Lane, and Marrowbone Lane (from Forbes Lane to Robert Street South).

A non-statutory public consultation was held for this section of the scheme from October to December 2022. This aimed to inform the public about the scheme and allow interested parties to give their opinions of the proposal. Construction of the interim measures commenced in August 2023 and were complete in 2024.
