Suir Road / Davitt Road Junction Upgrade

This junction upgrade is part of the Kilmainham to Thomas Street Active Travel Scheme. Public consultation has occurred, and the scheme is now in the Detailed Design and Procurement phase.

The main features of the junction upgrade include:

  • Reducing the junction from five arms to a three-arm T-junction by closing the Slievenamon slip road
  • Shortening the vehicle journey through the junction for traffic
  • The introduction of cycle signals and cycle protection islands
  • The introduction of a bus gate, which limits vehicles from Slievenamon Road to Dolphin Road to bus only
  • Increasing green areas and providing landscaping

A non-statutory public consultation was carried out between 13 June 2024 and 9 August 2024. A Public Consultation Report has been produced which is available to view here.

  • To improve junction safety and efficiency of operation.
  • To provide safe coherent routing through the junction for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • To reduce number of collisions and near misses with trams.

Traffic other than buses and bicycles may access Dolphin Road via Galtymore Road or Mourne Road when the bus gate is operable.

Slievenamon Road north of Galtymore Road will be local access only for general traffic coming from the south. All traffic will be able to access Slievenamon Road from the north from Dolphin Road.

A number of design options were considered for the junction upgrade, but the bus gate provided the biggest reduction in delays for buses using the junction. Allowing general traffic to use this exit onto Dolphin Road would have led to significant delays for buses through the junction.

The overall scheme is being delivered on a phased basis. Interim works have been installed from South Circular Road (at Rialto Bridge) to Marrowbone Lane in the initial phase of works. Now, the Suir Road junction upgrade is required to be delivered ahead of the remainder of the scheme as a safety improvement.

The remainder of the Kilmainham to Thomas Street Active Travel Scheme is planned to be delivered as a single phase after the Suir Road junction upgrades are implemented.
