Cabra Library presents, for Bealtaine Festival 2025, a Poetry READING Workshop with Niall MacMonagle.
Everybody is welcome, especially those who might be uneasy about, embarrassed by or indifferent to poetry. In a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, the workshop will explore how poets, since the earliest time, have captured the varied and interesting and challenging stages of our lives, how every mood and way of viewing the world, how all human life is contained within poetry. Poets explored during the workshop will include poets traditional and modern including Shakespeare, Fleur Adcock, Louis MacNeice, Kerry Hardie, Czeslaw Milosz, Elizabeth Bishop, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Carol Ann Duffy, Anonymous, Carl Sandburg, Rosita Boland and William Blake.
Niall MacMonagle is one of Ireland's most trusted commentators on poetry. He initiated and edited the bestselling Lifelinesseries, in which public figures wrote about their favourite poems, and Windharp: Poems of Ireland Since 1916. He also edits the poetry anthologies for transition year and the Leaving Certificate. A frequent contributor to RTE Radio 1, he lives in Dublin, where for many years he taught English at Wesley College.
