Historic Towns Initiative and Inchicore-Kilmainham

Historic Towns Initiative

The Historic Towns Initiative, known as HTI, supports the policy Town Centre First: a policy approach for Irish towns, published in 2022.

The Historic Towns Initiative is a joint programme delivered by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the Heritage Council. Its aim is to promote heritage-led regeneration in Ireland’s historic towns.

The Historic Towns Initiative 2025 provides support to historic towns that are engaged in programmes of heritage-led regeneration.

Inchicore-Kilmainham Conservation Management Plan

In 2025, with support from the Historic Towns Initiative, Dublin City Council’s Conservation Section prepared a Conservation Management Plan, known as a CMP, for the Inchicore-Kilmainham area.

The Conservation Management Plan identifies potential future projects for the area. These projects aim to:

  • Address residential vacancy and dereliction in town centres
  • Promote the re-use of historic buildings and structures
  • Act as demonstration projects for similar initiatives in the future

Projects identified in the Conservation Management Plan may be eligible for future grant funding under the Historic Towns Initiative, subject to meeting eligibility criteria in future funding rounds.
