Dublin City Council introduces cycle lockers

Published on 20th March 2026

Dublin City Council, with the support of the National Transport Authority, is engaging in a small pilot project which will see around 40 cycle lockers of different types being installed in various locations around the city centre.

These lockers are intended for short-term use, enabling visitors to securely park their bikes for a few hours while they socialise, shop, dine, or visit the city centre's many attractions. (These lockers are different to the Bike Bunkers that are being rolled out separately to provide secure cycle parking in residential areas).

Secure cycle lockers will be installed in several public locations (both on-street and off-street) throughout Spring 2026, followed by an evaluation period of at least one year to assess their impact. The project is being managed by Bleeper on behalf of Dublin City Council.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam said,

“I am delighted to launch this innovative pilot of cycle lockers in Dublin City, a practical step forward in building a more active, living and engaged city.

We know that one of the biggest barriers to cycling is the simple question of where to leave your bike safely. This pilot tackles that challenge head on by providing secure, convenient parking in the very places people want to be, whether that is to meet friends, support local businesses, or enjoy everything our city centre has to offer.

If we are serious about creating an active city, we must make cycling easier. If we are serious about a living city, we must make it easier for people to spend time here. And if we are serious about an engaged city, we must remove the small, everyday obstacles that hold people back from participating fully in city life.

These cycle lockers may be a small intervention, but they represent a big shift in how we think about mobility, accessibility and the everyday experience of Dublin.”

Alec Dundon Senior Executive Engineer, City Centre Projects, Dublin City Council said:

Installing these cycle lockers lets us see how secure short‑term bike parking works in busy urban spaces. This pilot will help us understand where lockers are most effective and how people use them, shaping future cycling infrastructure that is practical, reliable and supports more people to feel confident cycling into the city for short trips.”

Hugh Cooney CEO, Bleeper said:

“We’re delighted to be working with Dublin City Council and bring our experience in shared mobility to this new Cycle Locker pilot for the city. This is another way for people to feel facilitated to cycle to the city centre.”

Notes to the Editor:

What is a Cycle Locker?

A cycle locker is a secure unit with a lockable door which is designed to contain a single bicycle.

The Dublin pilot project will incorporate cycle lockers from several hardware and software providers.

The cycle lockers will be fitted with smartlocks, meaning a user can open and close their locker - and pay for their bike's stay - all within a simple smartphone app.

The first cycle lockers have now been installed on Capel Street and Grafton Street Lower and are operational.

How do I use a Cycle Locker?

Instructions on how to use a cycle locker will be displayed on its door. It will generally involve downloading an app and creating an account within that app.

As more cycle lockers are installed, we will add further information here about their locations and how to use them.

The first cycle lockers have now been installed on Capel Street and Grafton Street, with six lockers installed in each location.

Project Objectives

  • Provide secure short-term cycle parking in Dublin city centre.
  • Assess the demand for secure short-term cycle parking.
  • Compare various hardware and software solutions for short-term cycle lockers.
  • Assess the performance of different location types, e.g. on-street vs. off-street.
  • Generate feedback from locker users, city residents, businesses, and city centre visitors.
