Two Centuries of Science: A History of Dunsink Observatory

Perched on a hill northwest of Dublin city, Dunsink Observatory is Ireland's oldest purpose-built scientific research centre, and its 226 year story is far richer than its modest façade suggests.

From keeping Dublin's official time standard to producing some of the most celebrated mathematical discoveries of the nineteenth century, Dunsink has quietly shaped Irish scientific life since 1785. Its directors have included world-renowned mathematicians and scientists, its telescopes were crafted by one of Dublin's great precision engineering firms, and its fate was ultimately decided by a Taoiseach with a passion for mathematics.

This rescheduled talk, with Historian in Residence Dr. Caitlin White, traces Dunsink's remarkable journey from Georgian observatory to national scientific treasure, exploring the personalities and discoveries that have made it one of Ireland's most fascinating institutions. Dr. Caitlin White will be joined by Sadhbh Leahy, Education and Public Engagement Officer at Dunsink Observatory.
