The Dublin Prison Library Service is an agency service of Dublin City Libraries to the Irish Prison Service. The Service manages eight libraries in prisons in Dublin, providing a similar range of material and services to those provided by public libraries.

Prison Branch Libraries

The Prison Library Service manages nine libraries in Dublin:

  • Mountjoy Males
  • Medical Unit, Mountjoy
  • C-West, Mountjoy
  • Dochas Centre (Female Prison)
  • Training Unit
  • Arbour Hill Prison
  • Wheatfield Prison
  • East Wing, Wheatfield
  • Cloverhill Prison

Libraries in prisons provide a similar range of material and services to those provided by public libraries. In addition to a lending and reference collection and depending on their size, the branch libraries provide some or all of the following:

  • Periodicals
  • Foreign Language Material
  • Talking Books
  • Large Print
  • Music Listening Posts
  • TV/DVD
  • Music Lending
  • DVD Lending
  • Law Requests

Library users may request items not available in their library.

The Prison Library Service puts special emphasis on collection development in areas that are particularly relevant to the prison population, i.e. Literacy, Foreign Language and Self-Help.
