Book Delivery Service
You can avail of a home delivery service provided by our Library in the Community service.
Our home delivery service has been a big hit. We've had a number of queries about how it works so we have put together this FAQ.
What is the home delivery library service?
Older people and people who are long-term isolating in Dublin City can have a selection of library books, audiobooks or DVDs delivered to their doorstep.
This service is brought to you by Dublin City Council Library Services working in collaboration with the Dublin City Volunteer Centre.
How do I get books delivered to my door?
Ring us at 01 222 4770 between 10am to 2pm from Monday to Friday.
Leave a message with your name and number if you can’t get through straightaway and we’ll get back to you. Or if you prefer, email us at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!
What kind of books can I get?
When you contact us, we’ll ask you a series of questions about what you like to read or to listen to. You may enjoy sagas or romance for example. Or you may prefer crime and thrillers.
Examples of genres to choose from include:
- Sci Fi/Fantasy
- Literary titles
- Short stories
- Mills & Boon
You can of course choose more than one genre or fiction type if you like.
How will my books be selected?
Our experienced library staff will make a selection for you based on the information you give us about your reading preferences. They will select titles for you using a ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ approach.
How many titles can I borrow?
We’ll select up to six titles for you and issue them to your library card.
What if I’ve already read them or if I don’t like what you’ve chosen for me?
We hope you will find something to enjoy in the titles we select for you. You can also ring us again to order more books and we’ll try to find other titles to suit you.
How often can I order books?
As often as you want!
What if I don’t like fiction but would still like something to read?
No problem, let us know what you like and we’ll see what we can find for you. For example, you may like true crime stories, or you might prefer books about history.
Just let us know, and we’ll try to find something as close as to your area of interest as we can.
Can I ask for a particular book?
Unfortunately, we can’t give you a specific title but we can try to find books for you written in a similar style or by similar authors.
I find it easier to listen to books than to read them. Do you have something to suit me?
Absolutely. When you call us, we will ask you which format you prefer, for example:
- Book – Large Print – Audiobook-CDs – DVD – etc.
I don’t live in Dublin City. Can I still borrow books?
When you ring, we’ll check where you live and refer you to your nearest library service.
When can I expect to get my books?
You can expect to receive them between 3 to 5 days after when we take your call.
I’m not a library member. Can I still have books delivered?
Don’t worry if you’re not already a library member. Just give us a call and we’ll sign you up.
How long can I keep my books?
All items are on long loan to you for three months. And there are no fines anymore even if they are returned late to us.
We can also renew your books for you if you want to hold on to them for longer.
How do I return my books?
You can ask the volunteer delivering your books to take back books you already have on loan and finished reading.
If you want to return books but don’t want to borrow anymore, that’s fine too. Just contact us at the number or email above and we’ll sort it out.
But please don’t worry. As we’ve said already, there are no fines anymore on library items.
Will you let me know when my books will be delivered?
Yes, we will. We’ll call you in the morning to let you know to expect a delivery on that particular day. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to give you an exact time, but we will let you know the name of the person making the delivery to you.
What if I still miss my delivery?
Don’t worry. We’ll put your books back with the other bags for delivery on another day and contact you again.
Who will deliver my books?
A volunteer from the Dublin City Volunteer Centre will deliver your books to you, and they will do the following:
- Ring your doorbell
- Put down the bag of books and stand back
- Hold up an ID so that you can see their identification when you come to the door
- Introduce themselves
- Have a little chat with you from a safe distance if you like
For your safety and well-being, all the volunteers making book deliveries to your home have been Garda Vetted.
We’d very much like to thank the Dublin City Volunteer Centre for working in collaboration with us on delivering this service to you.
If you have any questions at all, please give us a call and we will do our best to help you. And please do let us know how you get on with our home delivery service. We appreciate any feedback you have for us.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Stay safe and stay well.
