We are pleased to offer a wide range of children’s books as Gaeilge in our Cúinne Gaeilge in Cabra Library. I would like to give you a snapshot of the kinds of children’s books that are available for borrowing from the libraries.

As with all children’s books, there are board books, picture books, fiction books and non-fiction books. Children’s Books Ireland’s Junior Seachtain na Gaeilge reading list is a really good place to start when you want to get acquainted with Irish language books.

Many of you may remember the Bran books from when you were little. They are still on the go! There are even potty books as Gaeilge!

It’s possible to get books as Gaeilge with an accompanying CD - Frog sa Spéir, Eileanór an Eilifint Éagsúil, and Béirín na Picnice.

Irish language books for children

There are so many great picture books available as Gaeilge. How about getting a book in both English and Irish? Lulu and the Noisy Night or Lúlú agus an Oíche Ghlórach is one such example. Or give a series a try - such as Rita agus an….

There are also graphic novels like TinTin available as Gaeilge. You can get translated versions of books by well-known authors such as Enid Blyton, Julia Donaldson and Oliver Jeffers. The Horrid Henry books have also been translated and the series is called Dónall Dána! There’s also the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, which is called Dialann Duradáin, not to mention Harry Potter.

Other well-known Irish writers who write as Gaeilge include Patricia Forde and Siobhan Parkinson.

A fantastic non-fiction book is Foclóiropedia. A nice non-fiction book for younger children is An Chead 100 Uimhir.

Tá súil agam go bhfuil sé sin úsáideach díobh.
