Book Club Pick: Clear by Carys Davies
Published on 2nd September 2025
Set in the 1840s in Scotland against the background of the highland clearances and the establishment of the Wee Frees, the Free Presbyterian Church. John Ferguson, a Presbyterian minister, with no income, struggling to survive, support his wife and establish an independent Presbyterian church in central Edinburgh, accepts a commission to visit a remote island off the north of Scotland and to persuade the last surviving inhabitant to leave the island.

Beset by seasickness en route, Ferguson arrives on the island and after an accidental fall is found unconscious by Ivar, the man he has come to evict. Ivar takes him to his house where he regains consciousness over several days and is nursed back to health.
Not having any language in common, they gradually develop some basic communication, and an emotional bond develops between the two men.
Meantime, Mary Ferguson, the minister’s wife, concerned for her husband, pawns what she owns and arrives on the island to bring her husband home. Initially reluctant to leave the island, Ivar is torn by his attachment to Ferguson. Mary, aware of the bond that has developed between her husband and Ivar, is worried for the survival of her marriage.
It is easy to understand why Carys Davies is an award-winning novelist. Her research is exemplary, her characters are well portrayed, and the language is distinct, subtle and a joy to read. Any book group reading this book will have lots to discuss on the historical context of the highland clearances, the rift in the Presbyterian church brought about by the control of landowners exerted over the church and the lives of the characters in the novel.
