Lock Boxes Example

Dublin City Council would like to announce that it will be removing and destroying any lock boxes left in the public domain from 14th April under the Roads Act, as agreed by the Elected Members at the Council meeting on 3rd March.

Lock boxes or key boxes in Dublin are frequently being placed in the public domain attached to bike stands and street signage poles to store keys, in a pin-coded compartment by short term rental hosts.

There are a number of issues associated with them in the public domain including impeding the footpath, posing a trip hazard and public health issues by becoming contaminated. There is also no authorisation for their use in the public realm and so this gives rise to issues regarding liability for any accidents, trips or other injuries in the public realm.

The placement of these units in the public realm is not authorised by Dublin City Council and under the Roads Act, Dublin City Council has the power to remove these units from the street.
