Firefighting and Emergency Services
Our full-time stations are staffed seven days a week by firefighters and officers, while our part-time stations are on a 24-hour paging system for fire, rescue and medical emergency incidents.
Dublin Fire Brigade (DFB) provides a fully integrated fire, emergency ambulance and rescue service for the four Dublin local authorities: Dublin City Council, South Dublin County Council, Fingal County Council and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.
To facilitate the provision of this service, DFB employs approximately 1,000 personnel. The service works across six districts operating 12 full-time fire stations, two part-time stations, a fleet of over 115 vehicles, a training centre, a control centre, a fire prevention unit, administration and workshops.
All of our full-time firefighters are trained to paramedic standard and are required to maintain registration with the Pre-Hospital Emergency Care Council as paramedic practitioners. Over 80 are trained at an advanced paramedic level and all of our part-time firefighters are trained to emergency first responder level.
The East Region Control Centre
From its headquarters on Townsend Street, DFB also operates and manages the East Region Control Centre which handles the fire, rescue and emergency calls for most of Leinster. It also handles all emergency ambulance calls for Dublin city and county.
Accredited by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch as a centre of excellence, the centre can dispatch fire and ambulance resources to serious incidents simultaneously.
Emergency Ambulance Service
Dublin Fire Brigade’s Emergency Ambulance Service contains a fleet of 12 emergency ambulances. Each ambulance is staffed by two firefighters or paramedics who are ready to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
In addition, there are 21 fire engines with up to 120 paramedics available to respond on a daily basis. All our firefighters are trained to paramedic standard and continuously rotate between ambulance and fire duties.
Rescue and Emergency Planning
DFB responds to a diverse range of emergencies. As well as fighting fires and responding to emergency ambulance incidents, it also responds to incidents involving water rescue, highline rescue, road traffic collisions, flooding, chemical incidents and marine emergency response.
DFB also undertakes major emergency planning, pre-incident planning and the control of major accident hazards to prepare for every kind of emergency and ensure the safety of the people of Dublin.
The Dublin Civil Defence Unit also supports DFB by providing crowd control, water rescue, fire cover and medical support at a range of events. The unit's main role is to assist frontline emergency services during times of natural disaster and major emergency. It is ready to provide support during evacuations at nominated Dublin rest centres.
Other Services
DFB provides fire prevention and community education programmes, as well as advice on fire safety in new and existing buildings. It issues 2,000 Fire Safety Certificates every year and has various powers of inspection and enforcement.
Dublin Fire Brigade also provides a Marine Emergency Response for Irish waters. If a vessel requires assistance for an emergency on board, our firefighters will be flown to the scene by helicopter.
