Abnormal Load Permit

An abnormal load is a load which, due to its weight or dimensions, cannot be carried on a conventional goods vehicle.  A permit to move goods by road is required where any of the following conditions apply:

  • Maximum vehicle width including cargo exceeds 2.90 metres
  • Total vehicle length including cargo exceeds 16.5 metres
  • Total weight of vehicle and cargo exceeds 44 tonnes

An Abnormal Load permit covers journeys on a particular one-way route only and is valid for up to 3 months from the date of issue.

Note: You must reapply every time you want a new permit (there are no automatic renewals).  This permit pertains to any roads travelled on within the administrative areas of Dublin City.

The fee for this permit is €31.00.

Amount of Notice Required

Your application must be made at least 30 working days prior to the date of your proposed journey. Additional information may be requested by Dublin City Council as part of your application.

Requirements / Pre-Requisites

When selecting an appropriate route, a list of the following pre-defined routes are available to choose from:

  • Dublin Port to M50 via Alfie Byrne Road
  • M50 to Dublin Port via Alfie Byrne Road
  • Dublin Port to M50 via Tunnel
  • M50 to Dublin Port via Tunnel
  • Dublin Port to Merrion Road
  • Merrion Road to Dublin Port
  • Chapelizod By-Pass to Port

Where none of the above-mentioned routes are applicable, please refer to boundary map below when outlining the route and list all roads intending to travel.

Application Process 

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Upon approval, the applicant will receive a confirmation email containing a reference number and request for payment, offering the option to either complete the transaction online via a provided link or to contact customer services to arrange payment over the phone.
  3. Notify An Garda Síochána (Irish police).  You can do so by contacting the following Superintendents

Note: You must also notify the local Superintendents for any other area through which you intend to travel. Contact An Garda Síochána at Dublin Castle for more information.

4. Notify any other local authorities. You must also notify the local authorities for any other area through which you intend to travel.  This includes other areas of Dublin, including:
•    North Dublin city outskirts/North Dublin County: Fingal County Council
•    South/Southeast Dublin County: Dun Laoghaire - Rathdown County Council
•    South/Southwest Dublin County: South Dublin County Council.

5. Notify Dublin Port Tunnel (only if route is via the Tunnel).

Payment Methods

Prior to the issuance of the permit, payment of the appropriate fee must be made by credit/debit card, money order, or cheque (made payable to ‘Dublin City Council’).
