Place Cranes, Hoists or Vehicles on a Public Road
A permit will be required when the positioning of a mobile crane, hoist, or combined vehicle on a public road or footpath results in obstruction to a lane of traffic, or interferes with pedestrian traffic flow.
A hoist, cherry picker, vehicle, mobile crane or equipment permit is required when the positioning of any of the following is on a public road or footpath and results in an obstruction to a lane of traffic or interferes with pedestrian traffic flow.
A minimum fee of €100 per day is required for permits pertaining to cranes and hoists. However, costs may be substantially higher, depending on the nature, duration or location of the works involved. Additional charges may apply for:
- Impingement on a public roadway
- Pedestrian diversion or footpath modifications
- Suspension of parking bays on the roadway
Charges may be reduced by up to 50% for works carried out between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., on a Saturday/Sunday or public holidays.

Amount of Notice Required
Your application must be submitted no later than 14 days (excluding weekends & Bank Holidays) prior to the proposed placement of the hoist/cherry picker/vehicle/equipment.
Application Process
- Complete the online application form.
- A Roadworks Control inspector will review the application, which will then either be approved with conditions attached or refused.
- Upon approval, the applicant will receive a confirmation email containing a reference number and request for payment, offering the option to either complete the transaction online via a provided link or to contact customer services to arrange payment over the phone.

If your vehicle, etc will affect Pay & Display/Permit Parking Bay(s), you must contact the Council's Parking Enforcement Division in advance — e-mail: [email protected] or Tel. (01) 222 2261. This Department has no objection to the positioning of a Hoist/Cherry Picker/Vehicle/Equipment, subject to compliance with the following conditions:
- A full Traffic Management Plan and Method Statement to be submitted with this form
- Health & Safety Statement to be prepared by competent person
- Local Gardai is notified
- Banksman/pointsmen are duty
- Provision is made for the safe passage of vehicular/ pedestrian traffic around the mobile crane
- The Permit/Licence (if issued) to be retained on site for inspection by Dublin City Council Officials
- Identification signs are displayed
- Prepayment for any metered, pay & display or disc parking bays that Will be by the positioning of the crane is received by this office
- If crane is being located on a pedestrian zone during its operational hours. then for the movement of the crane to and from site must be approved by the Gardai.
- This Permit/Licence (if issued) is retained on site for inspection by Dublin City Council Officials
- Traffic management arrangements are to comply with Traffic Signs Manual Chapter 8 "Temporary Traffic Measures and Signs for Roadworks" published by Department of Transport.
- No works within 30 metres of any signalised junction except with prior consent of a Traffic Officer.

Prior to the issuance of the permit, payment of the appropriate fee must be made by credit/debit card, money order, or cheque (made payable to ‘Dublin City Council’).
