Check the Register of Electors

If you live in Dublin and are eligible to vote, it is important to make sure your details are correct on the Register of Electors. This ensures you can vote in upcoming elections and referendums.

How to Register

You can register to vote online or by completing a paper form.

To register online, you will need:

  • Your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN)
  • Date of birth
  • Eircode
  • Email address

If you do not have a PPSN, you can still register using a paper form. You will need to have your identity verified at a Garda station or by your local authority.

You must be:

  • At least 18 years old on polling day
  • Ordinarily resident in Ireland

If you are aged 16 or 17, you can pre-register. Your name will be added to the live register when you turn 18.

Types of Elections in Ireland

Your citizenship determines which elections you can vote in:

Presidential Election

  • Elects the President of Ireland every 7 years.
  • Only Irish citizens aged 18 or over can vote.
  • Ireland is treated as a single national constituency.

General Election

  • Elects members of Dáil Éireann (national parliament).
  • Irish and British citizens aged 18 or over can vote.
  • Held at least every 5 years.

Local Election

  • Elects councillors to local authorities.
  • All residents aged 18 or over can vote, regardless of nationality.
  • Held every 5 years.

European Parliament Election

  • Elects Irish Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
  • EU citizens living in Ireland can vote.
  • Held every 5 years.

Special Voting Arrangements

You may be eligible for postal voting or inclusion on the special voters list if:

  • You live in a hospital, nursing home, or similar facility
  • You have a disability or illness
  • Your job prevents you from voting in person
  • You are a member of An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, or a diplomat abroad
  • You are registered as an anonymous elector for safety reasons

Deadlines

Your registration must be received at least 15 days before polling day (excluding Sundays and public holidays).


Deadlines for postal and special voting applications are earlier.

The President of Ireland (Uachtarán na hÉireann) is Ireland’s Head of State, elected by the public every seven years. The next presidential election is happening on Friday, 24 October 2025.

To vote in person, make sure you're registered by Tuesday, 7 October 2025.

The deadline for postal voting arrangements for the presidential election is Monday, 29 September 2025. Please register as early as possible!

To vote in a presidential election, you must be:

  • An Irish citizen
  • Aged 18 or over
  • Registered to vote
  • Ordinarily resident in Ireland
