Housing Supply

Back to Housing and Community Services

Dublin City Council is continually involved in building new houses and apartments, refurbishing existing properties and purchasing private properties on the open market. All of these properties are used for social housing and, when ready, allocated to persons from our housing waiting lists.

Currently we are adding properties to our housing stock through the following schemes:

New Build

We are building or planning to build on sites around the city that we own.

Scheme locations are:

  • Buttercup, Darndale
  • Infirmary Road, Dublin 8
  • North King Street
  • Cornamona Court, Ballyfermot
  • Belcamp, Priorswood

Rapid Build

This is similar to our New Build schemes, but in these cases houses and apartments are constructed in a factory before being delivered and completed on site. Rapid Build scheme locations are:

  • Woodbank Drive, Finglas
  • Rathvilly Park, Finglas
  • Kilmore Road, Coolock
  • Fishamble Street, Dublin 8
  • Bunratty Road, Coolock

Regeneration

In these cases, the City Council renovates and rebuilds its older flat complexes. Regeneration schemes are either underway or in planning at the following locations:

  • Dolphin House
  • St. Teresa’s Gardens
  • O’Devaney Gardens
  • Lower Dominick Street
  • Croke Villas/Sackville Avenue
  • Ballybough Road

Part V

Planning applications for residential development of 10 units or more must satisfy the requirements of Part V of the Planning and Development Act, 2000 (as amended) for the provision of social housing. Developers are strongly advised to consult in advance with the Council’s Housing Section on T: 01 222 5379 or T: 01 222 5281.

Urban Regeneration and Housing Act 2015 and Relevant Circulars.

Public Private Partnerships

A Public Private Partnership (PPP) is a commercial arrangement between a public body such as Dublin City Council and a private developer, whereby the developer constructs housing units on one of our sites and we get in return an agreed number of units from the completed development. This model is currently being utilised in Charlemont Street and is being proposed for two further locations:

  • Scribblestown, Finglas
  • Ayrfield, Malahide Road

Approved Housing Bodies

Dublin City Council supports Approved Housing Bodies in the acquisition or construction of units for social housing purposes. Tenants for these units come from Dublin City Council’s Housing List. To date, Approved Housing Bodies have delivered approximately 5,500 units in the city area.
